CURE-NG Study

Gonorrhoea is a common sexually transmitted infection that affects millions of people worldwide and can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in gonorrhoea cases. This rise is concerning because the bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics, making treatment more difficult.

Developing improved controlled human gonorrhoea infection models will help researchers better understand the infection and how the immune system reacts, which in future may help to develop new ways to prevent disease or better treat infection. That’s why we’re conducting the CURE-NG study. The CURE-NG study is a human challenge trial that aims to validate a throat infection model using a specific strain of gonorrhoea.

In this study, participants will be exposed to this specific strain via a throat swab. The study team will follow the course of the infection to learn how the body’s immune system reacts to it. We’re looking for participants (assigned male at birth) aged between 18 – 50 years old, who have sex with men (assigned male at birth) - and not with women - and are in good health, with no chronic medical conditions. Your involvement in this study could advance our knowledge of gonorrhoea infection and lead to better health outcomes globally.
