View MoreShingles is a painful rash that develops from a viral infection. Shingles can occur at any age, however the risk of developing shingles increases with age. Around 1 in 3 people will develop shingles during their lifetime. Shingles can cause complications, particularly in older adults. These include, predominantly, long-term pain, as well as other, more infrequent but serious complications such as vision loss, hearing loss, and inflammation of the brain. Vaccination is the best protection against shingles.
